Can I use my U.S dental insurance in Mexico?
If you have dental insurance in the U.S., you may be wondering whether you can use your benefits for dental treatment in Tijuana. The answer depends on your specific plan, but many PPO dental insurance plans may offer out-of-network benefits that can be used for treatment in Mexico.
At Restor Dental, we help patients understand their benefits before treatment whenever possible. In this guide, we’ll explain how U.S. dental insurance can work in Tijuana, what to expect when using your benefits, and how the reimbursement process works.
What Type of Dental Insurance Can I Use in Mexico?
If you have a PPO dental insurance plan, you may have out-of-network benefits that can be used for dental treatment in Mexico. HMO plans typically only cover treatment within their designated network, so they generally cannot be used for dental care in Mexico.
Some of the most common U.S. PPO dental insurance providers we work with include Delta Dental, Aetna, Cigna, MetLife, Guardian, UnitedHealthcare, United Concordia, etc.
Coverage can vary by plan, so if you don’t see your insurance provider listed, feel free to contact us. We can help verify your benefits before your visit.
What’s the Difference Between Using Dental Insurance in the U.S. vs. Mexico?
That’s a question we get asked a lot. While your insurance benefits remain the same, you may be able to make them go further when using your dental insurance in Mexico.
When you visit an in-network dentist in the U.S., the dental office typically bills your insurance directly, and you pay your estimated portion of the treatment.
When receiving dental treatment in Mexico, PPO insurance usually works on a reimbursement basis. You pay the dental office for your treatment, a claim is submitted to your insurance, and your insurance reimburses you directly for the covered amount.
Here’s where the difference can really matter: your insurance may calculate your benefits using its allowed or eligible amount for that procedure, which is generally based on U.S. dental fees, not on what the same treatment costs in Mexico.
Since dental treatment in Mexico can cost significantly less, the amount reimbursed by your insurance may represent a much larger portion of your actual treatment cost. In some cases, the reimbursement may even cover the full cost of a covered procedure.
This can help you make the most of your dental benefits and may leave more room in your budget for additional treatment that isn’t covered by your insurance.
But the exact reimbursement will always depend on your individual insurance plan, benefits, and how your insurance company calculates eligible charges.
So how does it work? How do I get started?
Getting started is simple. The first step is to verify your dental insurance benefits so we can better understand your coverage, plan limits, and annual maximum before your visit.
To get started, simply fill out our insurance verification form and send us a photo of your dental insurance card (front and back). Our team will take care of the verification process, which usually takes 1–2 business days, depending on your insurance provider..
Once your benefits are verified, we can help you understand what your plan may cover and schedule your appointment.
How Does Reimbursement Work? When do I get reimbursed?
After your treatment, we can prepare and submit the necessary claim documentation to your insurance company on your behalf. Since treatment is paid directly to Restor Dental, any approved reimbursement is sent directly to you by your insurance provider.
If you prefer to submit the claim yourself, you can also request copies of your dental X-rays, treatment forms, and other necessary documentation to send directly to your insurance company.
Processing times vary depending on the insurance provider and your individual plan, but reimbursement typically takes around 30–60 days after the claim is submitted.
How Much Will My Insurance Reimburse?
There is no single reimbursement percentage that applies to every patient.
Your reimbursement can depend on several factors, including your deductible, remaining annual maximum, percentage of coverage for a particular procedure, out-of-network benefits, and the amount your insurance company considers eligible for that service.
For example, even if your plan states that it covers a certain percentage of a crown or root canal, that percentage may be calculated using the insurance company's allowed fee rather than the actual treatment cost.
For this reason, any benefit estimate should be considered an estimate until the insurance company processes the claim.
What Dental Treatments Can Be Covered?
Coverage depends entirely on your individual policy, but dental insurance plans may provide benefits for services such as:
Dental exams and cleanings
X-rays
Fillings
Crowns
Root canal treatment
Extractions
Periodontal treatment
Other medically necessary dental procedures
Some plans may also provide benefits toward major restorative procedures, while cosmetic treatments are commonly excluded or have limited coverage.
What If My Dental Insurance Doesn't Cover Treatment in Mexico?
You can still receive treatment at Restor Dental without dental insurance.
Before beginning treatment, we provide a treatment plan explaining the procedures recommended for your individual case and their costs. This allows you to review your options and make an informed decision before proceeding.
For many patients traveling from the U.S., the cost of dental care in Tijuana can still be worth considering even when insurance benefits are limited or unavailable.
